The Akropolis of Erimokastro, Rhodes,  Greece

The Acropolis (Deserted Castle) is an established archaeological site, located at the northeastern part of the island of Rhodes at a natural hill between Kallithea and Afantou bays. Its walls are multifaceted and possibly of cyclopean type, 2-4m high and 1.7-2m wide, built from rubble stones. This archaeological site is depicted due to its historic value and its location. Situated between the Kalithea and Afantou bays, both of them, well acquainted in the Island of Rhodes, where the archaeological site prevails in the area and can become a touristic attraction.

Main objectives:
  • To protect the archaeological site from the new developed area (hotels and housing). by creating tools in order to make the site more attractive for tourists, scholars and students, by means of reconstructions with virtual models;
  • An in-depth diagnostic study, in order to provide data for the selection of compatible materials and techniques. The materials and their decay will be characterized using an array of non-destructive techniques (combination of close range photogrammetric and field survey, aerophotogrammetric survey with UAV, Application of NDT & E techniques: Ultrasonic testing, Ground Penetrating Radar, Infrared Thermography and Fiber Optic Microscopy) validated and supported by a series of analytical methods after sampling;
  • The combined use of analytical and non-destructive techniques can lead to the characterization of the building materials, the assessment of the environmental impact on them (decay diagnosis), supporting an integrated planning of the proposed conservation interventions.
